What counts as a pest emergency?
If a pest is a risk to health, food safety or your business, or it is stopping you using your home, treat it as urgent and call us.
Rats or mice inside, especially in kitchens or bedrooms
Rodents near food or where people sleep are a health risk. See rat control and mouse control.
A wasp nest near a doorway, a child’s room or someone with an allergy
If anyone has a history of anaphylaxis or is having a severe reaction, call 999 first. Keep doors and windows near the nest closed and keep children and pets away. See wasp nest removal.

What to do while you wait
Rats and mice
Put food away in sealed containers, clear up crumbs and keep pets and children out of the room. Don’t try to corner or handle a rodent, and don’t disturb a nest. Read what happens if you disturb a rat nest.
Wasps
Don’t disturb, block or spray the nest yourself. Keep nearby windows shut and keep everyone away from the entrance. Call 999 for any severe allergic reaction.
Bed bugs
Don’t move to another room or sofa to sleep, as that can spread them. Bag bedding and wash it hot, and don’t throw furniture out until it has been inspected.
Cockroaches and food premises
Isolate and cover exposed food, note where and when you saw them, and keep your cleaning and pest records to hand for the visit.
Birds and squirrels
Close internal doors to contain a trapped bird and open an exit window. For squirrels in the loft, stay out of the loft and keep pets away.

Why not wait for the council?
Council pest control services do a good job, but most are booked on weekdays and work on call-backs. For example, Hackney Council says it will contact you within 48 hours to book (Hackney pest control), and Islington Council confirms appointments within 24 hours, Monday to Friday (Islington pest control). Both checked 21 October 2026.
