Well, we are proud to say we are members, and we take it very seriously. In case you don’t know much about it, this article will explain what Think Wildlife is, and also why it’s so important.
Why should Think Wildlife‘s values matter to you?
Pest control is extremely problematic for some people. The simple reason is because this industry uses large of amounts of potentially dangerous chemicals and poisons. In addition to that, traps are extensively used to capture pests such as rodents and other animals classed as vermin. The issue with all of this is two-fold.
First of all, chemicals and pesticides are harmful for the environment. Secondly, some of these poisons may harm animals that are not the intended pests. This type of inadvertent harm is basically what Think Wildlife aims to combat. Their purpose is to prevent wildlife from the dangers associated with pest control. This is essentially why we are a member of this institution. We understand the damage associated with our industry and want to protect animal welfare and minimise harm to then.
How does Think Wildlife help to carry out this goal?
It does this with something they call stewardship. This is basically a set of rules which govern the supply and use of poisons, such as rodenticides. Part of these rules involve special training which aims to limit the environmental damage done by these poisons.
This training also helps pest controllers limit any harm that may be done to non-pest animals. Along with this, Think Wildlife has also created a code of best practice for pest controllers. These are guidelines which help to prevent damage to animals and the environment.
Something else this organisation does is monitor pesticide resistance in rodents. As you may or may not know, some pests are becoming immune to pesticides. Think Wildlife monitors this situation and helps to provide safe alternatives to pesticides. Finally, they work closely with the major suppliers of many pest exterminating products. Basically, if you’re not an accredited member of Think Wildlife, then it can be very hard to buy certain chemicals. The purpose of this is so that only people who are safely able to use poisons can get access to them.
As accredited members of Think Wildlife, we are trained and proficient in all of these guidelines and practices. This enables us to do our job with the minimum of harm to animals and the environment. It also helps us do our job more efficiently and effectively.
