Fridges are cold, and, for the most part, this usually repels insects. But believe it or not, you do occasionally get these pests in your fridge. If this happens, what can you do about insects in the fridge? What’s more, how do you keep them out for good.
Why do you insects in the fridge in the first place?
Insects in the fridge can become a massive problem if they get entrenched. Some insects that can make their way into your fridge include gnats, fruit flies, ants, and even cockroaches. These pests may be either dead or alive when you find them. Either way, it‘s a real problem. Often, you’ll only know that pests are getting into your fridge when you find dead ones in there. You may also find other signs, such as droppings.
But how do insects in the fridge get in? It’s usually one of two ways. First, pests come in on food. For example, you might place a bag of bread in your fridge. This bag could have ants hidden in it, or even cockroaches eggs. On the other hand, food in your fridge can attract pests. Or, your fridge may be dirty and have bits of food debris all over the place. Your condiments can also attracts pests when they have drips of sauce down the side of the bottles.
Having a faulty fridge can cause insect problems
Another way that pests get into fridges is when your fridge door seal is broken. There may be a small gap where pests can squeeze through. Insects can also thrive and multiply when your fridge isn’t cold enough. You see, the cold usually repels and kills pests. If your fridge is set at too low a temperature, this gives pests a chance to survive when they wouldn’t normally.
But what can you do about insects in the fridge? To start with, make your fridge colder. This will help to kill pests that get in. Next, take everything out of the fridge and clean it thoroughly. Also, clean all food packages and bottles. Then, when placing food in the fridge, try to put it in air-tight, sealed containers. Ideally, you’ll want to clean your fridge from top to bottom at least once a month. This is important for pests and food safety, especially in restaurants and other similar outlets,
Most importantly though, make sure your fridge seals shut properly. If there are any gaps around the seal, then you need to do something about this. Something else you’ll want to do is identify where the insects are coming from, and then stop them at the source.
