Halloween is here! But, while you may be looking forward to the festivities, there are always some inconveniences and responsibilities to bear in mind. From taking care around the fire hazard of your Halloween lanterns, to supervising young trick-or-treaters, there will be a lot of things on your mind this weekend. There is something you may not have considered though, and that is pests. No one loves Halloween more than pests. In fact, if you don’t take precautions, your fun could easily be ruined by them. Here are a few reasons why Halloween attracts pests.
Why Halloween attracts pests to your home
One of the main reasons that Halloween attracts pests is because of the abundance of sweets, chocolates and other treats. Pests like mice and rats absolutely love sweet foods like these. They also love to nibble on paper wrappers and take them away for nest building materials.
To prevent this from happening, all treats must be correctly stored. Do not leave chocolates and treats out in the open. If you have pest issues, then these treats will more than likely be eaten before the big night, leaving nothing to hand out. Also, be careful if you’re leaving baskets of treats outside your door for trick-or-treaters. It’s better to store the food so it’s pest proof by placing it in closed containers. This will prevent pests from getting at them.
Be sure to clean up any Halloween festivity mess. Your evening will be loads of fun, but don’t leave clearing up the aftermath until morning. Pests like the leftovers of a party as much as we love the socialising and spooky traditions. However, rodents and insects. Are nocturnal creatures and they will have their own party with those biscuit crumbs and streamers.
Don’t forget that pests will love your pumpkin
Another reason why Halloween attracts pests is because of all those yummy pumpkins. If you’re planning on carving pumpkins, then be careful. After all, pests see these vegetables as food, rather than decorations. When carving your pumpkin, make sure to clean up thoroughly afterwards. Wipe down the area when you’re done and throw away the messy pumpkin innards immediately.
Be mindful when placing your pumpkins outside. Put them in an area where pumpkin pests cannot easily get at them. For example, hanging them off the ground makes them less accessible to mice and other rodents. Placing traps around the area is something else you might want to do. In addition, do not leave pumpkins outdoors for long periods of time. Remove your creations quickly when Halloween is done. Do not leave them to rot, because this will attract flies, ants and may even need London cockroach control measures.
It’s critically important that you keep all of these points in mind. The last thing you want is your fun being ruined by pests! If you know you have a specific pest problem, then do something about it before Halloween arrives. Don’t wait until the big day, because by then it may be too late.
