Strange Places Pigeons Like To Nest

· Diamond Pest Control

Pigeons are a massive problem in towns and cities like London. As well as being a nuisance, they also cause tremendous amounts of damage. This is mostly because pigeons nest along people’s roof tops, and in places such as the eaves. That being said, these pests do not always go for roof tops. In fact, pigeons often make their homes in some unusual places.

Some weird places where pigeons nest

Like rats, pigeons are a pest that have developed alongside humans. These pests have evolved to live in urban areas. This means they are extremely adaptable, so you don’t only get pigeon problems on roofs. They will nest almost anywhere that humans live.

A good example of unlikely nesting sites are CCTV cameras. There are millions of these cameras all around the UK. Because they are high off the ground, they often provide pigeons with a secure place to live. The pigeon will build its nest on top of the cameras, which can cost the council in damaged equipment.

In big cities like London, you may also see pigeons making themselves at home on top of statues. Closely related to this are other high up areas like lampposts, electrical posts, and window ledges. Another strange place where pigeons nest is post boxes. As you can imagine, this can cause a massive headache for everyone concerned.

Things can get even stranger than that…

Along with this, transport providers may also find pigeons in signal boxes. These birds are also known to build their nests on top of traffic lights. This is extremely dangerous because the nest can block the light and potentially cause accidents. Talking about traffic, pigeons have also been known to build their nests in the engine of cars, the exhaust pipe, or on top of the tyres. This mostly happens if the car is not moved for a long period of time.

No matter where these birds are nesting, they will have to be removed. The reason why is obvious: over time these birds cause damage and dangers. The biggest source of this problem is their droppings. Pigeon droppings contain acid which gradually eats away at stone and brickwork. Another source of trouble are the nests themselves.

Nest can block things like gutters and air vents. When it rains, a blocked gutter can cause flooding and water damage. These birds also like to peck at things, and this also destroy property. For example, pigeons may peck at electrical wiring or other vital infrastructure.
